Gorizia, the town on the border with Slovenia, has always been a transit place. Since it opened the Balkan route, many of the refugees who are rejected at the Austrian border pass by here. The early days are damp makeshift shelters in the "jungle", the thick bush along the Isonzo river. Then the volunteers of the "Insieme con voi" and the MSF team provides to these refugees, hope and all the support they need: food, a well-equipped range of containers with 35 beds and cultural mediators who understand the language and the trauma that migrants have suffered during the journey that led them to seek asylum in Italy. Medicines sans Frontieres in collaboration with the Italian Red Cross provides a medical clinic and a staff ready for any need.
Jannick Juillot, project leader for MSF in Gorizia declares: "On 22 December 2015, the humanitarian situation of the refugees who arrive in Gorizia through the Balkan Route was really an emergency. We covered all the essential needs, doctors and good accomodation for the migrants forced to live in very bad conditions along the river. Now our containers offer a comfortable hospitality to refugees waiting for political asylum. At the moment the situation is stable. We will stay in Gorizia until the local structures will not meet the needs of migrants".
This project titled "Inside the Balkan Route" will take me to document all the hot spots and stories of migrants who seek a future in Europe fleeing from war, violence and poverty.
